Sarah & Siegfried Gaier — die Menschen hinter mypacing.
Sarah & Siegfried Gaier — the people behind mypacing.
We're Sarah and Siegfried. And we know exactly how this feels.
mypacing wasn't built in an office — it grew at our kitchen table, on good days and very bad ones. Because we're not writing about an illness we studied. We live with it.
Maybe you know the feeling: your body no longer does what it's supposed to. Something that used to be ordinary — shopping, a conversation, a flight of stairs — suddenly costs everything. And if you do it anyway, you pay the price days later, when you can barely get out of bed. That's exactly where it all started for us.
Before
We rode motorcycles, we went diving, we travelled. Sarah was right in the middle of life and work — she worked in the city treasury, 39 hours a week. A normal, active life with plans.Heute
Today
Most of that is gone. Some days are made of pauses between short walks. The motorcycle sits idle. Her further training — two years of work — she had to stop just before finishing.Dann kam Corona — zweimal
Then came COVID — twice
In 2022 Sarah had COVID twice, plus bronchitis over Christmas. We thought: this will pass, like always. But it didn't pass. From early 2023 on came a wave of symptoms that simply wouldn't stop and kept getting worse: leaden exhaustion, dizziness sitting and standing, headaches and muscle pain, trouble finding words, a memory as if through fog. And that one cruel pattern: after every effort — physical or mental — came the collapse. A "crash".
„Belastbar bis 40 Sekunden bei 70 Watt. Abbruch wegen Erschöpfung und anhaltendem Schwindel." — aus dem Belastungstest der Reha. Vierzig Sekunden. So klein war die Grenze geworden.
"Able to sustain 40 seconds at 70 watts. Stopped due to exhaustion and persistent dizziness." — from the exercise test at rehab. Forty seconds. That's how small the limit had become.
The odyssey — and the sentence so many of us know
MRTs, Ultraschall, EKG, Belastungstest, Blutbilder.
What came next, many affected people know by heart: the round of doctors' offices. GP, ENT, ophthalmologist, orthopaedist, diabetologist, neurologists, neurosurgery, sleep medicine, a cardiac rehab, a neuropsychological clinic. MRIs, ultrasound, ECG, exercise test, blood work. Much of it was "unremarkable". Some of it carried that undertone that comes up too often when the machines find nothing: Maybe it's psychological. Maybe she should just do a bit more exercise.
When your body breaks down and you're told you just need to move more, that isn't only wrong — it can send you straight into the next crash. And at some point the suspicion creeps in that the whole thing might just be some "fashionable illness". With this page we want to prove the opposite.
Was lange niemand sah, steht heute schwarz auf weiß
What no one saw for a long time is now in black and white
It took time, but the diagnoses are now official and medically confirmed — no doubt, nothing imagined:
The cardiac rehab also recorded that Sarah's heart is structurally healthy (good pumping function) — so the limit doesn't lie in the heart, but in what Long COVID does to the nervous system and energy metabolism.
Der Preis
The price
This illness doesn't only take strength. It takes life. Sarah could no longer work, couldn't finish the training she'd nearly completed, often can't drive even short distances anymore. And in the middle of that already dark time, we both lost a parent. There were weeks when the word "normal" sounded like it came from another life.
Warum es mypacing gibt
Why mypacing exists
Through all of it there was one bright spot — a sentence that almost got lost: even the rehab clinic wrote in the end that for Long COVID "a standardised exercise load makes no sense", only individual, day-dependent activity within your own limits. That a normal cardiac exercise group is even counterproductive. That the way forward is called pacing: budgeting your energy, staying under your own limit, avoiding crashes.
That was the answer. Only: how do you actually do it day to day? How do you know in the morning where your limit is today — on a hot day, after a bad night, after three too-full days? There was no tool that takes your own body data and translates it into simple, honest words. The industry builds step counters that push you toward more activity — the exact opposite of what we need.
Also haben wir es selbst gebaut. Kein Fitness-Tracker. Ein Pacing-Werkzeug — von Betroffenen für Betroffene.
So we built it ourselves. Not a fitness tracker. A pacing tool — by affected people, for affected people.
mypacing takes your wearable and health data and tells you in plain words how your body is doing, what that means, and what you can do today. It factors in heat, poor sleep, and the build-up of strain — the things that sent us into a crash again and again. It doesn't promise a cure, because there isn't one (yet). But it gives back something this illness takes away: a step of control.
Was wir wollen
What we want
Kein Unternehmen verdient daran.
We want to understand what's happening to us — and we don't want to do it alone. That's why the voluntary, anonymised data of everyone taking part flows together into a shared "brain": to find patterns no one could see alone — what triggers crashes, what helps others, how temperature, sleep, and strain hang together. No company profits from it. The data is not sold on. mypacing is free and lives on voluntary donations.
We're not doctors and not a company. We're two people who tried everything that was medically possible, and who would have wished for an honest, independent tool when things were at their darkest. Because it didn't exist, we're building it — and sharing it. For Sarah. For you. For everyone who's been told too often that it's "not that bad".
If you're reading this and nodding because you know it: you're not alone, and you're not imagining it. Let's look for answers together — and for a way back to a normal life.
